Dr. Michael Mason’s research lab is currently seeking students (undergraduate and graduate-level) who are interested in gaining behavioral health research experience. Volunteer internship opportunities and independent study options are available.
Interns work closely with lab staff as well as with Dr. Mason on various projects in the areas of adolescent and young adult substance use prevention and treatment, social and environmental risk factors, and utilization of mobile technology to address public health. We study the intersection of peer networks and environmental settings and how these factors contribute to healthy and risky behaviors such as substance use.
Opportunities for hands-on research experience, manuscript authorship, and academic presentations are available to committed students. Interns are expected to become part of a professional research team and thus, basic research training is required.
Minimum 8 hours per week for two semesters are required for internships.
While students in the social sciences with prior research and/or statistical knowledge are preferred, students with various levels of knowledge will be considered. Qualified candidates will submit a writing sample and interview with the lab staff.
Preferred List of Qualifications:
- Experience in social science research, working with study participants, recruiting and following participants, clinical trial experience/knowledge
- Attention to detail, thoroughness, and documentation
- Current student seeking Bachelors degree in relevant field; Masters preferred
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to follow complex research protocol and guidelines
